Dinner was oddly quiet, but I didnât mind. Iâm sure Mom and Dad could sense my heartache and were giving me space to wrap my head around . . . everything.
Although their own guilt may have had something to do with the silence. I saw them sharing more than one uncomfortable look throughout our meal.
Unable to bear it any longer, I pushed my plate away and focused my attention on them. âYou guys are not nearly as subtle as you think you are,â I informed them.
Dad quirked an eyebrow, trying to feign innocence. âWhat do you mean?â
Rolling my red-rimmed eyes, I made sure to let my gaze linger on each of them until they squirmed in their seats.
Dad placed his hands on either side of his plate and hung his head. âIâm sorry we didnât tell you sooner. We shouldnât have kept it from you. Any of it.â
Part of me really wanted to cling to my anger and hurt from their deceit. But if I was going to do what God had been nudging me to do, then I didnât need any hard feelings between us.
I didnât want to be mad at them. Iâd spent enough years holding onto hurt and anger toward Haley and Crosby. Now that I had started to shed the weight of those, I didnât want to add more.
âIâm moving home,â I burst out before I could change my mind.
Momâs and Dadâs faces showed confusion, followed by disbelief at my words. Momâs hand went to her mouth, and I knew she was getting ready to start crying tears of joy.
Dadâs brow furrowed, and he gave me a quizzical look. âWhy?â
I leaned forward, my elbows planted on the table with my chin resting on my palm. âHaley is going to need more round-the-clock care asâas she . . .â I trailed off, swallowing the lump of sorrow lodged in my throat. I couldnât finish the sentence, so I continued on. âMom, you told me not long ago that Rebecca was having trouble with her rheumatoid arthritis. Right?â
Mom nodded, her blue eyes etched with a mixture of pride and sorrow.
âWell, she may be able to help with Haley now, but later . . .â I shrugged. âI have the training. Not just as a nurse, but specifically working at the cancer clinic. If it comes down to hospice care, at least Haley would have a friend and not a stranger taking care of her.â
Dad reached his hand across the table and laid it on my arm, his eyes brimming with unshed tears. âIâm so proud of you, honey.â
Mom jumped up and came around the table, wrapping me in her warm embrace. âIâm proud of you too.â She pulled back to look at me, a soft smile on her face through the flow of tears. âAnd Iâll admit that Iâm pretty pleased youâll be home with us again.â
âWhen do you think youâll be moving?â
âI need to call my boss tomorrow after church and let him know I wonât be returning.
